RV Insurance, On or Off the Road

Recreational vehicles (RVs) require insurance coverage, just like any other motor vehicle. An RV needs more than what an auto policy provides, and although the options may sound complicated, your independent insurance agent can help you sort them out. Proper coverage is based upon the type and status of your RV, where you live and where you’ll be going or staying.

Is Your RV Paid for in Full or Financed?  rv on the road

Laws and regulations differ from one state to another. Campgrounds sometimes have their own rules about insurance, so be sure to let your agent know how and where you’ll be using your RV. If your camper is paid in full, liability coverage may still be required. If financed, the bank usually requires maximum coverage.

Where Will You be Using Your RV?

  • If you’re living in your RV full time and traveling, coverage for the vehicle and drivers is similar to auto insurance.
  • If your RV is parked in a seasonal campground year round, a particular type of coverage is available if you’re not going to hit the road.
  • Will you be towing a car behind your motorhome? Be sure to discuss options with your agent.
  • Will you be towing your camper behind a tow vehicle? Coverage is different when it’s not parked all season.

What Type of RV Do You Have?
Each type of RV requires a different type and level of coverage. Which do you own or plan to buy?

  • Class A, B or C motorhome
  • Fifth wheel
  • Folding or pop-up camper
  • Toy hauler
  • Travel trailer
  • Truck camper

Motorized homes on wheels, or motorhomes, can be big bus-style vehicles, medium sized campers built on truck bodies, conversion vans, truck campers or RUVs.

Fifth-wheels, travel trailers, folding campers, toy haulers and pop-up or folding campers are non-motorized and are all pulled by a tow vehicle, usually (but not always) by a pick-up truck.

RV Rentals
Check with the RV rental agent to see if the RV is already covered or available for purchase. If not, talk to your insurance agent to see if you are covered under your personal vehicle policy.

Whether you're using your RV on or off the road, insurance coverage is always a smart idea — as it affords greater peace of mind for you, your passengers and your visitors.

Your agent will help you determine which RV insurance coverages are mandatory or optional and which plan is right for you.

Protect your home away from home. Call Advance Insurance at 801-226-1100 for more information on Orem RV insurance.
