Who is Responsible for Dry Dock Damage to Your Boat?

When you dock your boat and move on for the day, you may not think twice about the boat’s safety. You trust your marina. And when you put your boat into dry dock storage or even remote storage, you again don’t think twice about the boat’s overall safety. But you should. Depending on the contracts you have, you may not have any protection against losses you face as a result of putting your boat in storage. Boat insurance is one of the investments you need to make, even when you are not using your boat, to ensure it remains protected.

Marina contracts, for wet and dry storage and docking, vary significantly. Many of these contracts will limit the amount of exposure the marina has to damage to your boat. And that could mean you hold the responsibility for its damage or lack of structural integrity. Most contracts offer some level of protection from theft, as well as overall damage. However, these contracts also often shift a great deal of the risk from the company onto your shoulders. That is costly and it is limiting in terms of what happens if there is a major weather risk. What can you do?

Ensure Your Boat Insurance is Up to Date
Instead of counting on your dock to provide you with the financial protections you need in cases like this, it is best to turn to a boat insurance policy. Your boat insurance can offer coverage for the actual structural integrity of your boat while it is being stored, no matter where it is being stored. As a boat owner, it is essential to have proper insurance protection in place to reduce your risks. Weather events, theft, vandalism and deterioration can all be costly events that occur while your boat is out of your sight and not in use. Yet, insurance can help minimize these risks. What’s more, these policies tend to be affordable as well.

No matter if you are using a dry dock or away from the marina storage, having the right type of boat insurance matters. Take a closer look at the policies available to you and update yours to ensure it offers the flexibility and protection you need.
